American Century

Eutopia Americana?

Okay, channeling the delusional, overly-confident charm of Rupert Pupkin from The King of Comedy — originally played by Robert De Niro.

Listen, okay, first of all, this is a huge story. Nobody’s talking about it, but they will. They will when I break it.

So there’s this American bear. Big guy. Grizzly. Red-blooded. Probably salutes the flag every morning. Used to eat steak. Raw. Capitalism on four legs. You follow me?

And then one day — boom. He goes commie.

Not the scary kind, not gulags and stuff, no. I’m talking co-op grocery store membership. Reusable tote bag. He’s reading pamphlets in the woods about “collective hibernation.” He’s telling the other bears, “Why are we competing for salmon when we can redistribute the berries?”

And the meat? Forget it. Done. He’s eating veggie burgers.

Not even good ones. The frozen kind. He’s standing by the campfire grilling soy patties like he’s auditioning for public television. “This isn’t about hunger,” he says. “It’s about sustainability.”

Sustainability! He used to maul fishermen!

And I’m watching this thinking — this is a comeback story. This is inspirational. You get typecast as a carnivore your whole life, and suddenly you pivot. That’s branding. That’s range. That’s show business.

People laugh at him. “Oh look, the bear’s gone soft.” But you know what? He’s booked on podcasts. He’s writing a manifesto called From Claws to Cause. He’s got merch. Little hammer-and-sickle paw prints.

And me? I respect it. Because it takes guts to change your diet in this country. You try ordering a veggie burger in the wilderness — the other bears look at you like you betrayed the Constitution.

But that’s vision. That’s leadership.

And when the salmon run dries up and everybody’s panicking? Guess who’s calm. Guess who’s got quinoa stored for winter.

That bear.

You can laugh now. They all laughed at me too.

But someday? You’ll see him on late night.

And I’ll be the guy who discovered him.
